Biography of Fela Kuti

Fela Kuti was born in 1938 in Abeokuta, Nigeria, into a prominent and influential family. His father was a reverend and a school principal, and his mother was a feminist and an anti-colonial activist. He had two brothers who became medical doctors and a cousin who became a Nobel laureate in literature.

Kuti showed an interest in music from an early age, learning to play the piano and the drums. He also sang in his school choir. In 1958, he moved to London to study medicine, but soon switched to music at the Trinity College of Music. There, he was exposed to jazz and classical music, as well as the emerging rock and roll scene.

In 1963, he returned to Nigeria and formed his first band, Koola Lobitos, which played a fusion of highlife and jazz. He also worked as a radio producer and a music critic. In 1969, he took his band to the United States for a tour, where he encountered the Black Power movement and the music of James Brown. He was inspired by their political and musical messages, and decided to change his name from Ransome-Kuti to Anikulapo-Kuti, meaning \"he who carries death in his pouch.\"

He also developed his own style of music, which he called Afrobeat. Afrobeat was a blend of funk, jazz, salsa, calypso, and traditional African rhythms. It also featured complex arrangements, long instrumental solos, call-and-response vocals, and political lyrics. Kuti's band, which he renamed Africa 70 (and later Egypt 80), consisted of up to 30 musicians, including horn players, guitarists, percussionists, singers, dancers, and his musical director and drummer Tony Allen.

Afrobeat became hugely popular in Nigeria and across Africa in the 1970s and '80s. Kuti's songs addressed various social issues such as poverty, inequality, corruption, oppression, colonialism, neocolonialism, religion, and culture. Some of his most famous songs include Lady, Shakara, Gentleman, Water No Get Enemy, Zombie, Sorrow Tears & Blood, No Agreement, Roforofo Fight, Shuffering and Shmiling, Coffin for Head of State, I T T (International Thief Thief), Army Arrangement, and O.D.O.O (Overtake Don Overtake Overtake).
